Speaking Interview Questions
These are the interview-style follow-up prompts at the end of the speaking paper.
Q8 Interview Q1 Problem / Solution Speaking Interview
Interviewer: Thank you for participating. Today, I'd like to ask you some questions about your work-life balance. First, can you share one or two strategies that you use that you think are effective in managing your work-life balance?
🎧 Question Audio
C1-C2 Sample Answer
CEFR C1-C2 target
  • State the habit or experience directly, then add a reflective reason.
  • Use pauses after contrast markers such as although, not simply, and rather than.
One strategy I use is separating work time from personal time as clearly as possible. I try not to answer non-urgent messages late at night, and I schedule small breaks during the day. These habits help me recover instead of carrying work pressure everywhere. The deeper goal is not perfect separation but recoverable energy, so work does not consume the whole self.
C1-C2 key phrases to imitate
  • recoverable energy
  • in practical terms
  • as a regular part of my routine
  • separating work time from personal time
  • non-urgent messages
  • small breaks
  • carrying work pressure everywhere
C1-C2 sentence structures
  • I would characterize my ... as ..., in the sense that ...
  • Although ..., I tend to ..., especially when ...
  • What makes this sustainable / meaningful is that ...
  • It is less about ... than about ...
Q9 Interview Q2 Preference Speaking Interview
Interviewer: I see. Many companies are now developing programs to help employees manage work-life balance. Would programs like this affect your interest in working for a particular company? Why or why not?

C1-C2 Sample Answer
CEFR C1-C2 target
  • Compare options naturally instead of listing them mechanically.
  • Stress the phrase that shows preference or priority.
Yes, work-life balance programs would affect my interest in a company. They show that the company sees employees as people, not just workers. Even if I did not use every program, knowing that support exists would make the workplace feel healthier and more trustworthy. Such programs signal institutional respect for employees' lives, which would definitely affect my view of a company.
C1-C2 key phrases to imitate
  • institutional respect for employees' lives
  • what I tend to prioritize
  • depending on the situation
  • affect my interest
  • sees employees as people
  • support exists

C1-C2 sentence structures
  • What I gravitate toward is ..., largely because ...
  • Depending on the situation, I might ..., but generally ...
  • The reason this appeals to me is that ...
  • I would put ... ahead of ... because ...
Q10 Interview Q3 Opinion Speaking Interview
Interviewer: Interesting. Some companies also offer flexible working hours or remote work options to help employees achieve a better work-life balance, but they are concerned that these options would reduce employee attention to tasks or engagement in the workplace. Do you think such programs are a good strategy for companies? Why or why not?

C1-C2 Sample Answer
CEFR C1-C2 target
  • Build a short narrative or hypothetical with a clear cause-and-effect line.
  • Segment the response into choice, reason, and consequence.
I think flexible hours and remote work can be a good strategy if companies set clear expectations. Flexibility does not automatically reduce attention; in fact, people may focus better when they can work during their most productive hours. The key is measuring results, not just time at a desk. Flexibility succeeds when companies evaluate outcomes rather than physical presence.
C1-C2 key phrases to imitate
  • outcomes rather than physical presence
  • what makes this choice compelling
  • the main obstacle would be
  • set clear expectations
  • most productive hours
  • measuring results
  • time at a desk

  • If I were given the chance to ..., I would ..., primarily because ...
  • One experience that stands out is ..., not because ..., but because ...
  • The main challenge would be ..., so I would ...

Q11 Interview Q4 Prediction Speaking Interview
Interviewer: Good points. Lastly, looking to the future, do you think people's attitudes towards work-life balance will change? For example, do you think people will prioritize personal life over work, or work over personal life? Explain your thoughts.

C1-C2 Sample Answer
CEFR C1-C2 target
  • Give a nuanced position with concession before your main argument.
  • Use intonation to signal contrast, qualification, and final judgment.
I think attitudes will shift toward valuing personal life more. Many people have seen that constant work does not always lead to happiness or better performance. In the future, successful careers may be defined not only by income, but also by health, flexibility, and time for family. I think people will increasingly define success through sustainable achievement, not just constant availability.
C1-C2 key phrases to imitate
  • sustainable achievement
  • I would take a qualified position
  • on balance
  • shift toward
  • constant work
  • better performance

  • The issue is not whether ..., but whether ...
  • On balance, I would argue that ...
  • That said, ... matters only if ...
