Maybe, like most people, you think of an inventor alone in his laboratory, tinkering with devices that no one else had ever dreamed of. Well, actually, there were often multiple people working on similar inventions at once. They’d improve on each other’s work, compete or collaborate. Have you heard of Lewis Latimer, who invented one kind of early air-conditioner and improved the toilet systems in trains? Probably not. Latimer, as a black man, was excluded from many opportunities that his white peers enjoyed in the United States. He never even got to attend high school, but he taught himself, uh, practiced on his own, to be a drafter, someone who makes technical drawings. Latimer’s drawings were so skillful they were practically works of art. He wrote poetry, and you can see his poetic sensitivity even in his drafting work. Anyway, after practicing to learn drafting. Latimer worked with several famous inventors over the span of his career. One was Hiram Maxim. Working with Hiram Maxim, Latimer developed and patented a major innovation in carbon filaments. Um, a carbon filament is a thin wire inside a light bulb that glows with electricity to produce light. Latimer made these filaments stronger and longer-lasting and easier to make. This was a major step in making lighting feasible and affordable for the general public.

You might think of a site like Ephesus, an ancient city located in western Turkey. By the way, some say that’s the largest excavated site on Earth. Ephesus includes massive remains from different time periods, including Roman, Greek, and Byzantine periods, which are different civilizations spanning millennia. For example, at Ephesus there are ruins of ancient Greek temples and Roman theaters. Other archaeological sites, though, are more difficult to reach. There’s an entire subfield of archaeology that focuses on these sites. It’s called underwater archaeology. Underwater archaeology is the study of human history through sites and artifacts found beneath the water’s surface. This includes shipwrecks, submerged settlements, harbors, and ports. Researchers have found all kinds of artifacts at underwater sites, including tools, pottery, coins, and other objects. Because water can slow decay, especially of organic materials like wood or textiles, underwater sties often provide exceptionally well-preserved evidence of past human activity. One notable underwater site the Uluburun shipwreck off the coast of Turkey, dating to about three-thousand years ago. Uluburun was discovered in 1982. Specialized diving and excavation techniques were used at this site and archaeologists recovered cargo including copper ingot and luxury goods. These artifacts shed light on ancient trade networks. They suggest that highly complex multi-regional trade routes connecting Central Asia to Europe and Africa existed far earlier than we expected.

Now, we might take blue for granted, but for centuries it was one of the most elusive and expensive pigments an artist could use. In ancient Egypt, artisans crafted blue from lapis lazuli, a brilliant stone mined in what is now Afghanistan. This mineral was so rare and so valuable that it was literally worth its weight in gold. Because of its scarcity, blue was reserved for the most honored subjects in art. In medieval European paintings, important holy figures were often cloaked in deep blue robes. This wasn’t just symbolic. It was also a financial statement. During the Renaissance, oil paints made the mixing and layering of colors easier, including the mixing of lapis lazuli powder with oil. Still, blue remained costly due to is natural sources. Then came a turning point in the eighteenth century, synthetic dyes. Prussian blue, which was originally created in Germany quite by accident, was affordable, vibrant, and widely accessible. Suddenly, artists from all walks of life could use blue freely. This democratization of color transformed artistic expression and open doors for artistic movements like Impressionism, where blue was used freely to evoke mood, atmosphere, and emotion. Even today, blue carries echoes of its luxurious past. It’s often linked to ideas of calm, depth and aspiration. Yet some traditionalists still argue that no synthetic pigment can match the richness and depth of lapis lazuli.
