Speaking Interview Questions
These are the interview-style follow-up prompts at the end of the speaking paper.
Q8 Interview Q1 Description Speaking Interview
Thank you for your willingness to participate. Today I'd like to ask you some questions about your experiences with commuting. First, what kinds of places do you usually go to during the week and how do you get there?
🎧 Question Audio
C1-C2 Sample Answer
CEFR C1-C2 target
  • State the habit or experience directly, then add a reflective reason.
  • Use pauses after contrast markers such as although, not simply, and rather than.
During the week I usually go to school, shops, and sometimes a library or gym. I normally use public transportation or walk if the place is nearby. I prefer not to rely on cars because traffic can be unpredictable and parking often takes extra time. In practical terms, my transportation choices are shaped by predictability and energy cost as much as distance.
C1-C2 key phrases to imitate
  • predictability and energy cost
  • in practical terms
  • as a regular part of my routine
  • during the week
  • if the place is nearby
  • rely on cars

C1-C2 sentence structures

  • Although ..., I tend to ..., especially when ...
  • What makes this sustainable / meaningful is that ...
  • It is less about ... than about ...
Q9 Interview Q2 Story / Example Speaking Interview
Got it. Can you describe how someone in your family or a friend usually travels to work or school? How much time does it take and what transportation does the person use?

C1-C2 Sample Answer
CEFR C1-C2 target
  • Compare options naturally instead of listing them mechanically.
  • Stress the phrase that shows preference or priority.
A friend of mine takes the subway to school every morning. The trip usually takes about forty minutes, including the walk to the station. It is not extremely fast, but it is predictable, so she can read messages or review notes instead of worrying about traffic. Her commute is manageable because it has a stable rhythm, which allows her to use the time rather than simply endure it.
C1-C2 key phrases to imitate
  • a stable rhythm
  • what I tend to prioritize
  • depending on the situation
  • including the walk to

Q10 Interview Q3 Opinion Speaking Interview
OK thanks. Next question. Some people believe that living close to work or school improves quality of life, while others think location doesn't matter much. What do you think and why?

C1-C2 Sample Answer
CEFR C1-C2 target
  • Build a short narrative or hypothetical with a clear cause-and-effect line.
  • Segment the response into choice, reason, and consequence.
I think living close to work or school can greatly improve quality of life. A shorter commute gives people more time to sleep, cook, exercise, or see friends. Location is not everything, but spending two hours a day traveling can slowly drain a person's energy. A short commute is valuable because it returns invisible time to a person's day, and that time affects health more than people realize.
C1-C2 key phrases to imitate
  • invisible time
  • what makes this choice compelling
  • the main obstacle would be
  • greatly improve quality of life

Q11 Interview Q4 Opinion Speaking Interview
Great final question. Some people believe that employers should reimburse employees for their commuting costs, while others think that employees should pay for their own travel to work. Which view do you agree with and why?

C1-C2 Sample Answer
CEFR C1-C2 target
  • Give a nuanced position with concession before your main argument.
  • Use intonation to signal contrast, qualification, and final judgment.
I believe employers should help with commuting costs, at least partly. Employees travel because the job requires them to be there, so it seems fair for companies to share some of the expense. This support could also encourage people to use public transportation. I would frame reimbursement as shared responsibility, since the commute exists because the workplace requires physical presence.
C1-C2 key phrases to imitate
  • shared responsibility
  • I would take a qualified position
  • on balance
  • at least partly
  • the job requires them to
  • share some of the expense

  • On balance, I would argue that ...
  • That said, ... matters only if ...
