If you see one that has a long wiggly body and a lot of legs, you might want to know, after you've possibly shrieked at it, whether it was a centipede or a millipede. Well, both centipedes and millipedes are maybe a few centimeters long and have bodies made up of many segments. That's why they're considered relatives in the animal kingdom. Oh, and they've both got poor vision, or no ability to see. The name centipede comes from Latin and means 100 feet, and then millipede means 1,000 feet. Well, millipedes do have more legs, sometimes more than 1,000, but probably not exactly 1,000. And centipedes don't really have 100 either. Now, millipedes, they have 2 sets of legs for each segment of their body, and those 2 sets of legs are under, right beneath their body. That's their position. By contrast, centipedes have just 1 set of legs for each body segment, and those single sets are jointed and positioned on the side of the centipede's body. So these leg locations would make it more obvious which critter you're looking at if you come across one. What they do when they're threatened is different also. Centipedes might bite, though it's generally harmless to humans. Then they run away. But millipedes will roll themselves up and then emit a stinky odor. Hard to decide which is worse.
